Softball looks to Spring season

During the spring of 2020, the softball team put up an impressive 16-1 record, breaking into the Top 5 in National polls. In just 17 games, the Louisburg College Softball team hit 32 Home Runs and scored 198 runs while maintaining a .414 batting average as a team. Unfortunately, COVID-19 paused the team's chance of returning to the national spotlight.

When the team returned this fall they did not have the normal opportunity to play outside competition so the coaching staff divided teams to play a mock 5-game series and the competitive juices were flowing.

"It was chippy and I loved it," remarked head coach Eric Lee. "We pitched extremely well and struck out a lot of batters. Pitching is way ahead right now of where its ever been."

One of those pitchers is returner Ina Womack. "We really wanted to focus on attacking the strike zone, because she gave up too many free passes last year," commented Coach Lee. "She excelled in the last few weeks, and her strikeout to walk ratio in the fall was much better than last spring."

Other noticeables for the Hurricanes include newcomer Lark Collins. Collins is a freshman who has come in and taken on a totally different role than the coaching staff anticipated. "She came in and worked her tail off," said Coach Lee. "She has become a really solid hitter and defender for us. We've learned that Lark can play first base and outfield. She's a good enough athlete to do it."

Also of note in the fall was Chelsea Roberson. Roberson, a product of Louisburg High School, wowed her teammates behind the plate from day one. She is an elite defensive player. Coach Lee expounded, "She is a receiver, framer, and will neutralize the run game of anybody we play."

The Hurricanes open up at the JUCO Kickoff Classic in Clearwater, FL on January 29-31. They will have two weeks to get ready upon returning to campus. It will be two weeks of live hitting and pitching, or according to Coach Lee, "Dotting our eyes and crossing our t's to make sure that everything we taught this fall is sharp."
