Bauer and McDermott lead XC to Championship

On Saturday October 30, Louisburg Men's Cross Country set out for the NJCAA Region X Championship. 7 runners competed for Louisburg including: Matthew Bauer, Kyle McDermott, John Gormley, Brian Marquis Jr., Tiwan Woodard, Sean Johnson, and Tanner Oullete.

"Going into the meet, we had an idea that we were the favorites," said Coach Caldwell. "We have won this meet every year since 2014, but we still had to go out there and take care of business to punch our ticket to the NJCAA National Meet in Richmond, on November 13."

The Hurricanes did just that. The course was challenging and everyone's times were slower, but in the words of Coach Caldwell, "place was all that mattered today."

Sophomores Matthew Bauer and Kyle McDermott came through on their pre-race projected 1st and 2nd place finishes, with Bauer getting the nod as Regional Champion and runner of the year. Sophomore John Gormely, who was cleared to return after 2 weeks out due to COVID protocol, came up huge for the Canes with a 4th place overall finish. Freshmen Brian Marquis Jr. and Tiwan Woodard rounded out the scoring for Louisburg College with 5th and 6th place finishes respectively.

"It was good for Brian and Tiwan to see that everyone who finished ahead of them were sophomores," said Coach Caldwell. "If they work hard and stay healthy over the next 12 months, next year the individual titles could be theirs."

The top 7 runners in the race were named to the NJCAA Region X All-Region Team. That list included: Bauer, McDermott, Gormley, and Marquis Jr.

"I am obviously proud of Matt and Kyle. We go as they go," said Coach Caldwell. "And it was really good getting John Gormley back. He missed our last meet at ECU which hurt our finish there. Sean [Johnson] and Tanner [Oullete] are two of the hardest workers on this team. They come in day in and day out and put the work in. They earned their spots to compete in this race and rounded out our team which again defended our title."
