Men's Basketball Advances to National Tournament in Danville, Illinois

Thursday night men's basketball took on Florida Gateway College in the second round of the Region X tournament. The Hurricanes took a 42-36 lead into halftime and maintained their 6 point advantage to prevail 83-77.

"We had several days of good preparation leading up to Florida Gateway and the guys made sure we defended the way we needed to win," said Louisburg Coach Bagwell. "When Bass [Diop] went down we were definitely at a size disadvantage, but guys stepped up and played big."

Antonio Patterson led the Hurricanes with 17 points and 10 rebounds (4 offensive). Terrelle Bowens also had 17 points, Jordan Beale added 16. 

In the semifinal match up on Friday Jonathan McFall had 39 points for Catawba Valley, but it wasn't enough as Louisburg reached their goal of making it to the national tournament by defeating Catawba Valley Community College. The Hurricanes went into halftime down by a basket, but outscored Catawba Valley 51-43 in the second half to win 95-90.

"We decided to win," said Coach Bagwell. "It was obvious in the way that we rebounded that we were going to do whatever it took to get the result we wanted."

DeShone Hicks scored 25 for the Hurricanes. He also collected 9 rebounds in the game. Terrelle Bowens had a double-double—adding 22 points and 11 rebounds (7 offensive). Jordan Beale added 16 points.

In Saturday's championship game Louisburg led in the early going, but towards the end of the half Davidson County went on a 22-3 run to go into the locker room up 43-28. The Hurricanes were able to cut a 23-point lead to 6 in the last minutes, but Davidson County took the victory 85-77. 

DeShone Hicks scored 23 points in the game. Terrelle Bowens added 21. Jordan Beale had 14.

"Our turnovers late in the first half hurt us. Davidson [County] converted on all of them," said Coach Bagwell. "I'm proud of the effort we gave in the second half trying to give ourselves a chance."

Men's Basketball will now advance to the Sweet 16 in Danville, Illinois. The selection show is Tuesday, March 10. Games begin on March 16 at Danville Area Community College.
