Men's basketball attain two victories in the Roger Taylor Basketball Classic

Louisburg College men's basketball hosted the Roger Taylor Classic last weekend. They finished 2-1 for the weekend with victories over Brunswick Community College and the College of Southern Maryland, and a loss to Caldwell Community College. Fayetteville Technical Community College also participated in the event, but will not play the Hurricanes until Region X play.

The first game of the weekend for the Hurricanes was against a good Brunswick team. The 105-96 win came on 36 points from Aaron Simmons, followed by 17 points from DeShone Hicks and Jordan Beale respectfully.

"We were able to get out to a big lead early by going to the offensive glass. It helped make up for some of our lapses in defensive execution in the second half against a skilled Brunswick lineup," commented head coach Bryan Bagwell. Jalen Harris led in that category for the day with 5 of the Hurricanes 18 offensive rebounds.

On Saturday the Hurricanes were defeated by Caldwell Community College 104-84. The Hurricanes got off to a slow start down 13-5, but by the 12 minute mark in the first half the score was 19-20. At halftime Caldwell had extended their lead to 57-41.

"Coach McIver does a great job with his guys," said Bagwell. "They are very persistent. They never stop pursuing the basketball." The Hurricanes cut the lead to 9 at the 12-minute mark, but ran out of gas as Caldwell closed out the game strong.

Aaron Simmons had 23 points. De'Shone Hicks, Jordan Beale, and Terrelle Bowens all finished with double figures but it wasn't enough to hold off Caldwell.

College of Southern Maryland was the last opponent for the Hurricanes in the tournament. After three games the injury riddled Hurricanes managed to hold on and win the contest on a 3-point buzzer beater from Terrelle Bowens. He and Aaron Simmons hit some big free throws down the stretch to keep the game close. Other notable stats include De'Shone Hicks 7-13 from the 3PT line. Also, Terrelle Bowens and JahQuez Sanders each had 4 offensive rebounds. The Hurricanes ended the day with the 99-98 victory.

Men's Basketball have no midweek games, but travel to new Region X opponent Southwest Virginia Community College this Saturday for a 3:30 tip.
