Bio

Jonathan Hodges joined the Hurricane defense in July 2019.

In 2018, Hodges worked with the West Charlotte High School defense that made it into the second round of the state playoffs for the first time in a decade.

In 2014, he was a part of a Campbell University defense that set program records for interception return touchdowns, interception return yards, pass breakups and quarterback hurries while improving the Camels' production in total interceptions and tackles.

Linebacker Andrew Yost was one of three Campbell defensive players to be named All-PFL. While Luke Hill was named honorable mention All-PFL. Yost was also named Second Team Academic All-PFL.

The three starting linebackers (Hill, Yost, and Barr) combined for 230 tackles on the season, more than any other trio in Campbell history.

In 2013, Hodges helped guide the Camel defense to improvements in total yardage, points per game, rushing yards per game and passing yards per game. Those strides included improvements of 62.3 yards of total offense and 54.7 yards rushing fewer per game.

Linebacker Matt Farris was one of two Camels on the defensive side to be named honorable mention All-PFL.

In two seasons at Johnson C. Smith (2011-2012), Hodges was responsible for developing and improving the linebacking unit while assisting in special teams coordination and recruiting at JCSU; his contribution helped guide Johnson C. Smith to back to back winning records for the first time in 40 years. During his time at JCSU, the Golden Bulls improved an average of 63 spots in the NCAA Division II rankings, marking the second biggest improvement in all of Division II.

Hodges coached the Golden Bulls’ top two tacklers in Michael Coats and Quinton Toomer in 2011, with both producing career bests in tackles, sacks, interceptions, and fumble recoveries. Hodges also helped JCSU secure its first postseason victory since 1969 with a win in the Pioneer Bowl.

Hodges’ coaching career began at Wake Forest-Rolesville High where he served as the linebackers coach and junior varsity special teams coordinator (2008-09). Prior to joining the staff at JCSU, Hodges interned under the Director of Athletics at Cedar Shoals High in Athens, Ga. (2010-11).

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Appalachian State University in 2008 and a master’s degree from the University of Georgia in Sports Administration in 2011.

Hodges and his wife, Joey, make their home in Wake Forest.
