Bio

Ray Hartsfield was added as an assistant coach for Louisburg’s men’s basketball program in March 2023.

He joins the Hurricane staff after spending 31 years as a high school basketball coach in North Carolina. Prior to joining the Hurricane staff, Ray Hartsfield spent 27 years as the head boy’s coach at East Chapel Hill HS. Hartsfield had been the only boy’s coach in the school history from 1996 – 2023 when he retired. Hartsfield also spent 18 years as the Athletic Director for East Chapel Hill (1998-2016) during his tenure. While coaching at ECHHS, Hartsfield’s teams won 6 conference championships, 5 conference tournament championships, a 2-time Regional Finalist, 1 Regional Championship and 1 State Championship - the first in the school’s history. Hartsfield was selected as conference coach of the year 5 times and was the North Carolina AP State Coach of the Year in 1997. His teams won 422 games in 29 years. 

During his 18 years as the Athletic Director, his varsity sports teams won 147 Conference championships, 87 Regional titles. 51 state championships, 8 conference cups and 5 Wachovia Cups. Before his time at East Chapel Hill, Hartsfield spent two years each at Forbush HS (1994-1996) as head varsity coach, and Durham Riverside (1992-1994) as an asst basketball and football coach. Hartsfield served for 9 and a half plus years in the United States Marine Corps prior to his return to high school teaching and coaching. 

Hartsfield graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1979 with a BS in Health & Physical Education. He and his wife Katie reside in Durham, NC.
