Bio

Michael Statum was selected to head the Esports program on August 21st of 2023.  He brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience in various sports in the NJCAA over the last decade and leadership qualities built from over 13 years in the United States Marine Corps.  

2020 brought about many changes for a lot of people.  Coach Statum learned a lot of new skill sets by expanding his knowledge of Adobe Suite and Creative Cloud products for video and photo editing for live streaming purposes of video game play on Twitch as an extra means of income.  In 2021 Wake Technical Community College started their inaugural Esports program and Coach Statum joined their Rocket League team.  Having been a player for NJCAAE, Coach Statum has the unique perspective of being a competative player in the Esports realm as well as a coach within the NJCAA. 

"I was elated when Athletic Director Mike Holloman reached out to me about leading the Esports program," reamarked Coach Statum.  "Coming back to Louisburg is a blessing and I truly appreciate the opportunity both Mike Holloman and President Dr. Brown have bestowed upon me in leading the Esports program into the future. I believe Louisburg College is in prime position for an exciting future with their Esports program and I can't wait to get started on building this program into what I know it can be.  The family and community atmosphere here at Lousiburg is unlike any other."

In 2018 Coach Statum was brought in to assist the men's soccer team here at Louisburg College where he helped lead them to a 14-1-2 Regular Season Champions, NJCAA Region X Tournament Champions, a top ranking of 7th in the National Polls, and a playoff match for District Title.  Multiple members of that team were named 1st and 2nd team All-Region with many players moving on to DI and DII schools. Prior to that season, Statum was the Head Coach for women's soccer at Wake Tech for the 2017 season. 2015-2016 saw Coach Statum at the helm of both men's and women's soccer at Wake Tech where many players received All-American and All-Region honors as well as moving onto various NCAA DII, DIII, and NAIA schools. In the spring of 2015, Statum also assisted the Lady Eagles for softball as a hitting and base running coach. From 2011-2012, Coach Statum was an assistant for both women's soccer and volleyball at Wake Tech. 2010 was the first year Coach Statum began his coaching career as a men's assistant soccer coach at Wake Tech under his former Head Coach, Godfrey Miller, a former professional player and national Liberian team member. Statum played for Godfrey on Wake Tech's inagural soccer team from 2008-2009 scoring two goals and two assist both seasons. 

Prior to attending Wake Tech, Coach Statum served a tour of duty in Al Taqaddum, Iraq of the Al Anbar Province in 2007-2008. Statum served over 13 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserves as an Ammunition Technician and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. During that time Statum held various leadership positions such as; Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, Training Non-Commissioned Officer, Range Safety Officer, Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer Instructor, Qualifications/Certifications Instructor, Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (SNCOIC), and Field Ammunition Supply Point SNCOIC.

Coach Statum is married to his wife Jessica, a native of Canada.  The couple have two sons, David (10) and Nathaniel(6).  They reside in Clayton, NC.
