Louisburg Drops road game to #9 Catawba Valley

It was a high scoring affair Monday night when the Louisburg College women's basketball team traveled to Hickory, NC to take on the top team in Region X, Catawba Valley Community College. The Red Hawks, ranked ninth nationally, outlasted the Hurricanes to claim their first outright Region X regular season title since the 2012-13 season.

It was a physical, up and down game from the tip with a combined 29 fouls called between the two teams in the first half.  The Red Hawks (20-1, 13-0 in Region) jumped out to an early 30-19 lead after the first quarter.  The Hurricanes  (14-7, 7-6) answered in the second period outscoring Catawba Valley 23-15 and headed into halftime down by just three points, 45-42.

The Red Hawks pulled away again early in the second half but Louisburg College was able to tie the game at 84-84 with an 11-0 run, finished off by an Aniylah Bryant break away layup. Up by 1, Catawba Valley's Alliyah Chaplin scored a three-point play to put her team up by 4 with 39.1 seconds remaining.

Bryant finished the game with 25 points and was one of four Hurricanes in double figures.  Jainaya Jones also scored 25 points and 5 assists. Markela Avent and Caleah Smith had 15 and 13 points respectively.

Head Coach Jason Rasnake said after the game, "I'm really proud of the way our team battled tonight.  They bought into the game plan and put themselves in a position at the end of the game to beat the ninth ranked team in the country.  While we never like losing to anyone, this team gained a lot of confidence tonight heading into the last week of the season and into the Region Tournament."

The Hurricanes play their final road game against Bryant & Stratton this Saturday at 1pm.  They will wrap up the season with two home games at the Roger Taylor Athletic Center next week.  Fayetteville Tech on Tuesday afternoon at 4pm and Wake Tech Thursday evening at 6pm.
