Louisburg Drops Emotional Season Finale

Louisburg Drops Emotional Season Finale

LOUISBURG -- Wednesday night was an emotional one at the Taylor Center as Louisburg College honored its sophomore women's basketball players and cheerleaders in front of a large crowd.
Included in LC's list of sophomores was Nadia Davidson, who was tragically killed in a traffic accident two weeks ago. Several of Davidson's family members were in attendance and were presented with gifts and momentos by LC head coach Shay Hayes.
Once the game started, the Lady Hurricanes rode the emotion to the midpoint of the third period until Cape Fear Community College was eventually able to pull away for a 100-80 decision in LC's regular season finale.
Louisburg College will carry an 18-10 overall record into next week's Region X Tournament, which will be hosted by LC at the Taylor Center.
Against Cape Fear, Louisburg used some strong early 3-point shooting from Caleah Smith and Monique Jones to stay within 14-13 with just two minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
Cape Fear's rebounding advantage and transition ability helped the Sea Devils move ahead 47-34 at intermission, but the Lady Hurricanes clawed back to within 60-50 off a stickback from Markela Avent with 4:48 left in the frame.
LC was still in the contest, but the Lady Hurricanes' lack of size and depth finally took its toll as Hayes' club looked exhausted as Cape Fear went on a 15-2 spurt to all but seal the region victory.
The Sea Devils are 22-4 on the season, while Louisburg will hope to break a six-game winless streak when the tourney begins next week. The tournament winner will earn a spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Championships.
