Clinton Holds Off Lady Hurricanes

LOUISBURG -- Despite a late comeback attempt, Clinton College was able to hold off homestanding Louisburg College by an 84-70 margin last Saturday afternoon (Feb. 9) at the Taylor Center on the LC campus.
Louisburg College (18-6) fell behind 24-8 after one period of action, but was able to stay within striking distance and drew within 63-54 off a jumper from Markela Avent with 7:56 remaining in the fourth period.
But Clinton's Logan Taylor-McDaniels made sure LC would get no closer as she delivered eight points down the stretch as the Bears rebuilt their cushion to as many as 16 points.
Taylor-McDaniels had a double-double of 26 points and 15 boards for the winners, while Louisburg College was paced by 19 points and 14 rebounds off the bench from Qua'Dasia Gillard. Monique Jones (13) and Ameera McClain (10) also reached double figures in scoring for the Lady Hurricanes, who fell to 0-2 on the season against Clinton.
"I'm proud of the way the team fought back to get into the game,'' said LC coach Shay Hayes. "Our defense has to be better. We can't give up 24 points in a quarter. That's the game.''
LC has four key outings remaining -- all against Region X opponents. That stretch will begin this Saturday (Feb. 16) on the road versus Bryant and Stratton. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
The Lady Hurricanes will return home Feb. 27 for their regular season finale against Cape Fear Community College. LC will also host the Region X Tournament at the Taylor Center in March.
