Baseball Splits with Pitt

Louisburg College baseball played a four game series against Pitt this weekend. Saturday was played at Louisburg and Sunday was played at Pitt. The series split 2-2.

"Playing a team like Pitt CC, which is in the top of their league and top 10 in the rankings in the NJCAA, was good for our team leading us into our conference play," said Hurricanes coach Blake Herring. "They are always a well rounded ball club and we have to show up in all phases of the game to win a series."

In game one Louisburg defeated Pitt 5-3 on a great outing from Drew Stanley. Stanley went all 7 innings on the mound for the Hurricanes to get the win. He gave up a home run in the first and the fourth, but was able to otherwise hold Pitt scoreless. He had 11 strikeouts in the contest.

With Pitt up 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Brian Wilson and Philip Forbes both walked. Subsequently Wilson scored on a wild pitch and Forbes scored on a James McGrady single. Later Lucas Bosiger doubled allowing two more Hurricanes to score. The final run for Lousiburg came in the bottom of the third on a Nick Dicarlo double which plated Quintin Smith

Pitt defeated Louisburg in game two 3-2. Louisburg took an early lead in the second inning on a two run RBI by Quintin Smith, but were unable to score in the last 5 innings. Meanwhile Pitt scored one in the 3rd, one in the 4th, and one in the 6th for the win.

Jared Miller was the starting pitcher for Louisburg. He went 5.2 innings with 7 strikeouts, only giving up 4 hits, but 2 of those were home runs. The Hurricanes defense committed two errors behind him, allowing an unearned run. Aidan Cooper came on for the last 1.1 and held Pitt scoreless.

Game three was played on Sunday. The Hurricanes won 10-0. They scored 3 in the third, 2 in the fourth, and 5 in the fifth.

The Hurricanes were 10-26 at the plate with RBIs from Brian Wilson (2), Seth Coats (2), Nick Dicarlo, James McGrady, and Cal Henderson.

James McGrady pitched all 5 innings allowing 4 hits with 8 strikeouts.

The final game of the series opened up with a Philip Forbes 2 run home run, but it was not enough as Pitt got the win 5-3. The game put both teams at a 13-7 record.

Louisburg had 5 hits in the afternoon coming from 5 different Hurricanes: Khalil Greene, Nick Dicarlo, Philip Forbes, James McGrady, and Chance Purvis.

"We pitched it well all weekend. I told our guys I felt like we let two quality starts, one by Jared Miller on Saturday and one by Lane Roberson on Sunday, get wasted by not getting wins out of them," commented Coach Herring. "We didn't show our best offensively in those two games and Pitt was able to get a couple wins on us, but I have to give credit where it's due, the way Pitt pitched it against us exposed the fact that we need to get back to using the entire field offensively."

Looking forward Coach Herring had this to say, "This team has always answered challenges and are in a good mindset leading us into opening conference play at USC Lancaster this weekend.  We were able to get a lot of guys some at bats and all of our relief arms in the game during midweek play.  We are ready and everyone is 0-0 at this point in the season."
