Baseball sweeps USC Union

Louisburg College baseball took the field on April 2 and 3 and swept a 4-game series against USC Union.

According to Coach Blake Herring, "I was proud of the way our team prepared this past week after losing 4 straight games to some solid opponents. They didn't come to practice with their head down and feel sorry for themselves, they showed up with some energy and made a collective decision to get better."

In Game 1 Louisburg won 16-5. The Hurricanes had 14 hits including home runs by Chris Sparber and Jonah Beamon. The winning pitcher was Tyler Hall (5-1). He gave up one earned run in 4 innings of work.

In Game 2 the Hurricanes came from behind to win 5-4. There were RBI from David Cucci (2), Trendon Criag, and Eli Weisner. Bennet Nance was the starting pitcher. He went 6 innings and gave up 4 runs. K.J. Wells came on in the 7th and recorded the win after a Cucci single in the bottom of the 7th.

On Sunday the Hurricanes took Game 3 3-1. All Louisburg runs came in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a three-run home run from third baseman Eli Weisner that plated Cucci and Beamon. Tyler Shepherd started on the mound for the Hurricanes. He went 6 innings and gave up 1 run on 5 hits. Josh Swartz came on to close the game, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Coach Herring commented on Louisburg pitchers, "We had some solid pitching all weekend from our starters. It was good to see Josh Swartz get his first save of the year coming off of Tommy John surgery as well as Tyler Shepherd get his first win on the year."

In the final game of the weekend USC Union struck first, but Louisburg countered and finished with a 5-3 victory. Sparber, Beamon, Jared Glinski , and Noah Madison all had RBI for the Hurricanes. Cole Gursky (3-1) was the starting pitcher for Louisburg. He gave up 3 runs on 2 hits after walking three USC Union batters in his 4 innings of work. Tristan Snyder came on to shut out the Bantams in the final three innings to get the save.

The win moves baseball to 20-8 overall. They will take the field again at 3:00 on Wednesday at Camp Community College.

"Right now it is important that we manage our bodies and energy levels going into weekend series so that we have fresh legs under us," said Coach Herring. "When the legs are fresh, we tend to have more bat speed, throw more strikes and play with more conviction."
