Louisburg Sweeps Series On the Road

ALLENDALE, S.C. -- Any coach, regardless of sport, wants to see his or her club competing at peak performance near the end of the season.

That's exactly what is happening with the Louisburg College baseball team after the Hurricanes swept a four-contest Region X series last weekend at the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie.

The successful weekend, which featured continued strong pitching to go with some timely hitting, pushed LC's winning streak to seven games under veteran head coach Blake Herring.

The Hurricanes also went over the .500 mark with an overall record of 19-16. LC is also 10-8 in the league, which is good enough for fourth place.

LC gave up only seven runs last weekend, including a twinbill sweep last Saturday by scores of 8-1 and 8-2.

Ace Tucker Rogers pitched a gem in the opener, while the nightcap featured home runs from Darius Nobles and Cody Willis

The success continued Sunday as the Hurricanes clawed out tight victories by matching 4-2 margins.

Sunday's first matchup went to 11 innings before LC went ahead for good courtesy of a two-run homer from Phillip Boykin in the decisive final frame.

Nick Mandragona picked up the mound decision with five strong innings of relief after having already worked two innings the day before.

The finale also went LC's way as Chase Webb started and earned the victory with 5.1 solid frames of work.

Jordan Gay picked up his sixth save with a shutout seventh inning.

"We had a good weekend pitching,'' Herring said. "The highlights were Tucker's great start and Nick coming in Sunday and doing a great job after already throwing Saturday.''

Third place in the region will be at stake this weekend when the Hurricanes host USC-Sumter for four games at historic Frazier Field on the LC campus.

Doubleheaders will be played Friday and Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

"We're starting to put it all together,'' Herring said. "Defensively, we have really improved over the past few weekends. We already felt good about our pitching, and we have started to swing the bat a little bit. We feel good about where we are.''
