Louisburg Splits With Lancaster

LOUISBURG -- Needing a final-game victory to earn a series split, the Louisburg College Hurricanes got one in clutch fashion during their Region X baseball weekend against the University of South Carolina-Lancaster.

Phillip Boykin's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Louisburg the lead for good during a 4-3 decision over the Lancers on Sunday in the finale of the four-game set at Frazier Field on the LC campus.

During a weekend that was filled with strong pitching from both sides, it was fitting that the Hurricanes nabbed the split thanks in part to last-game starter Chase Webb, who allowed just one hit over six innings of work.

Jordan Gay tossed a perfect seventh inning to pick up his second save of the campaign.

The weekend opened with a split on Saturday as LC dropped the opener 7-3 before clawing back with a 5-4 triumph in Game Two as Justin Oakley drove in the eventual winner with a double in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lancers opened Sunday's action with a tight 4-3 win as the Hurricanes had trouble with the off-speed stuff of Seth Chestnut, who scattered four hits during his complete-game effort.

Boykin ripped a two-run homer for LC in the fourth, but Coach Blake Herring's club couldn't capitalize after putting two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth.

LC, however, bounced back in Sunday's finale to improve to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the league following what Herring surmised as a successful weekend.

"We finally put all of the pieces together -- pitching, defense and hitting,'' Herring said. "We played clean baseball the entire weekend.

"We take out two big innings (from Lancaster) all weekend, and we sweep the series.

"It was good to see us respond to those big innings without panicking and answering by continuing to play good baseball. We hope to heat our game up as the spring starts to heat up.''

Louisburg will host long-time rival Pitt Community College Wednesday at 5 p.m. for a non-league single game and will resume its Region X slate this Saturday and Sunday at home versus the Stingers from Florence-Darlington Tech.

Both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m. at Frazier Field.
