Hutchins Tallies 10 Strikeouts In Canes' First Round Win

Louisburg picked up it's 33rd win against Spartanburg Methodist in the first round of the Region X Tournament in Allendale, SC on Friday.

Behind a seven-inning effort by sophomore Haley Hutchins, the Canes defeated the defending Region X champs 4-0. Hutchins earned her 16th win this season, striking out 10 Pioneer batters.

The Hurricanes got on the board early when sophomore DaSha Hill led off the game with a single through the left side. Hill moved into scoring position on her 41st stolen base. A hit through the left side off the bat of Rachel Rusch plated Hill for the first run of the game. It turned out to be the only run the Canes would need.

Hill was 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored. Freshman shortstop Monica Pepe was also 2-for-3 with one run scored. Sophomore Priscila Sanchez went 2-for-3 and earned her team-high 29th RBI.

"I was very proud of our team today," said head coach Michelle Carlson. "When you come into tournament time as the No. 1 seed, you always have a target on your back. Our team has been relentless at the plate this season, and today was no different. They continue to impress me as they find ways to win. Spartanburg is a talented team and Haley was stellar today on the mound."

Louisburg moves on to the semifinal round on Saturday when they will face Harford (MD). The two teams met earlier this season when the Canes swept the Fighting Owls in a four-game series.
