Canes football come up with a 31-26 win over Jirah Prep

Saturday Louisburg College Football hosted Jireh Prep. Louisburg (2-4) finished the day with the victory 31-26.

In October the Hurricanes did not practice for two weeks, but instead used extra time in the weight room so that when they returned to practice there was a lot of renewed energy and excitement. Coach Tolbert commented, "Going into our fourth game we're still trying find out our identity. Having all that time off made it really difficult to get into the rhythm that a normal workweek of a season can bring, but overall our team did a nice job of handling the time away from play."

The rust showed early for the Hurricanes. After such a long break without a game their timing was off, and they had to make adjustments to the speed of the game. The Hurricanes got down two scores early. According to Coach Tolbert, "Jireh Prep does an excellent job of preparing their players and they performed well throughout the game.  We've always had competitive games with them and yesterday was as exciting as it gets!"

Soon things turned around for the Hurricanes scoring 19 points of their own in the second quarter. Quarterback Nate Harden played his best game of the season (21-31-0  215 yds 2 TDs 50 yds rushing 1 TD). His throwing improved, and he was able to make plays running the ball as well. According to Coach Tolbert, "He had a two good weeks of preparation leading up to the game, so we were not surprised by his performance."

Louisburg running backs played hard and ran the ball well. MJ Frazier had two touchdowns. Kjeir Finister, Damion Everette, and Keyonis Hopkins all contributed to the running game. "Ball security one of the keys to our win," said Offensive Coordinator Zbig Kepa, "We ran the ball with consistency and did our best job catching the football. We played just about our entire offense and each individual found a way to contribute." Chris Coleman had 5 catches for 94 yards. Jayland Moore had some timely First down receptions to keep drives alive. He finished with 7 catches for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensively the Hurricanes were able to limit Jireh Prep's top receiver to 4 catches 89 yards. The Hurricanes forced 4 interceptions and held them to 5 of 12 on 3rd down conversions. Jay Smith, Caleb Hayes and Mickey Smith had QB sacks on a day when the defensive line pressured the quarterback often.

With under a minute left the Louisburg defense was able to get a big 4th down stop to seal the victory. According to Coach Tolbert, "Guys overcame a lot of adversity yesterday and made plays when we needed them."

Louisburg will begin the final month of the season this Sunday at 1:00, as they take on ASA Brooklyn at Louisburg High School.
