Women's basketball defeat conference foe USC Salkehatchie 62-49

Louisburg College women's basketball traveled to 5-0 USC Salkehatchie Saturday afternoon and returned home with a 62-49 win over the Indians.

It was a slow start offensively for both teams when Markela Avent's corner three tied the score 6-6 with 5:07 left in the first quarter.  That would spark a 16-2 run by the Hurricanes to finish the first quarter with a 19-8 lead.

"I think both teams were feeling each other out to start the game. Our players were able to settle down and handle their early pressure," said Louisburg head coach Jason Rasnake.

The Hurricanes would extend the lead to as many as 16 in the first half.  The Indians got the lead down to 31-18 going into halftime.

Louisburg came out of the locker room hot with four different Hurricanes hitting threes in the third quarter and extending their lead. The fourth quarter, however, had the Hurricanes in foul trouble. In spite of a shortened bench, Louisburg was able to hold of a late push by Salkehatchie and come home with a big Region X road win.

The Hurricanes will take the week off for exams and be back on the road Saturday afternoon at The College of Southern Maryland.
