Lady canes basketball reach the century mark vs Johnston CC to get 1st victory of the season

It was a high scoring weekend for Lady Hurricanes in the annual Pizza Hut Classic to tip off the 2019-20 season.

The weekend started Friday afternoon with the Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers easily beating Lenoir Community College 91-37. It was much of the same in the 2nd game of the day as the Hurricanes defeated Johnston Community College 100-39.

Saturday brought a matchup between two high powered offenses and both teams didn't disappoint.  The Pioneers took an early lead ending the first quarter up 26-22. Then, Markela Avent led the way for the Hurricanes with 16 first half points as Louisburg fought back. The Hurricanes pulled within 2 points at halftime behind a 21 point 2nd quarter.

The dog fight continued late into the second half where the Hurricanes found themselves up three with 5 seconds left in the game. Then Spartanburg's Takeria Legette knocked down a three to force overtime.  In the extra period the Pioneers outscored the Hurricanes 18-15 and secured a 109-106 victory.

After the game, first year Head Coach of the Hurricanes, Jason Rasnake commented that,
"This weekend was really good for our team. Although the game versus Spartanburg Methodist didn't end the way we would have liked, we learned a lot about our team and built a lot of confidence for our upcoming games."

The Lady Hurricanes play again this Wednesday, November 6th against Lenoir Community College at 5pm in the Taylor Center
