Hurricanes Have Strong Season Openers

The Hurricanes come home to Louisburg with several school records, 2 event runner-ups, 3 event winners, and 5 NJCAA National Qualifiers had a strong start to their season at the Wake Forest Invitational In Winston Salem and ETSU Invitational. 

Sophomore Zach Boyers lead the way with the first national qualifier of the day with a heave of 15.36 in the shot put, good for second overall. 

Aveon Reid, and Tayshaun Chisholm earned National Qualification times in the 60h both Chisholm's time of 8.29, as well as Aveon's time of 8.11 broke the former school record. While Aveon Reid won the individual title.

At the jump pits, Freshman Tamiyah Megginson leapt to 11.22 m in the triple jump to win the event. She books her trip to nationals as the first ever from the lady 'Canes Indoor track team. The final national qualifier for the day came from Sophomore All-American Kyle Hinson with a 4:23 mile, with a 61 second last lap, good for 2nd place.

Orlandus Gamble won the High Jump in a school record 1.98 meters. His height narrowly had him miss qualification by 0.02 Meters.

The men's 4x400 team also broke a school record with a time of 3 minutes 26 seconds. The team of Levin Koonce, Qua-Ronz Robinson, John Connelly, and Aveon Reid beat NCAA schools like Davidson, and UNC-Pembroke while narrowly losing to Wake Forest to come second overall.

The Hurricanes will continue their season this weekend as they head to Lynchburg Virginia for the Liberty Kickoff.
