Green Excels at East-West Football Game

GREENSBORO -- Steve Green developed a reputation as a jack-of-all-trades performer during his gridiron career at Franklinton High School.

Green displayed that distinction last Wednesday as the Louisburg College signee stood out for the East Team during the annual North Carolina Coaches Association's East-West All-Star Football Game at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Greensboro Grimsley High School.

Lining up at slot wide receiver, Green caught two passes for 11 yards and also returned a pair of punts for 26 yards as part of the East's 20-8 triumph.

"Steve played very well,'' said Franklinton coach Jimmy Williams. "He got a lot of reps and made some big plays. He really seemed to pick up the (offensive) scheme well, and he also did very good on special teams.''

Green and FHS teammate Kendall Harris were the first players from Franklinton to be named to the East-West All-Star Football Game since the early 1970s.

Harris, a running back, had four carries for 18 yards. He will play next season at North Carolina Wesleyan College in nearby Rocky Mount.

During his senior year at Franklinton, Green helped the Red Rams to an 8-4 mark while reaching the second round of the Class 3-A State Playoffs.

Green also starred at cornerback for the Red Rams, but Williams sees his future at Louisburg being on the offensive side of the ball.

"I think Steve is going to be a great fit for Louisburg,'' Williams said. "He will have some challenges because of his size (5-foot-8), but his speed and work ethic should be able to offset that.

"He will do well at Louisburg and then hopefully he will have plenty of options in two years to finish out his career at a four-year school.''
