Football Canes Give Back To Community

LOUISBURG -- During his tenure as Louisburg College's football coach, Trevor Highfield has always accentuated a well-rounded experience for his student-athletes.

That intangible has been on display this semester as the Hurricanes have focused on being integral contributors to the communities in Franklin County.

Last Saturday, 35 football players, along with coaches and family members, took part in the annual United Way Franklin County Day of Caring.

The Louisburg contingent provided landscaping, painting, sanding and other improvement projects at Franklinton Middle School.

"Every semester break, I try to come up with a theme for our guys to focus on,'' Highfield said. "One of the things we wanted to do this semester was the theme of serving our community and serving each other.

"I am very happy that we have been able to serve more in the community than we ever have. Everybody on our coaching staff talks about how this is the best character group of kids we have had, and a lot of it is because they have done some of these things.''

In addition to last weekend's trip to Franklinton, the Hurricanes have also taken on the following projects this year:

• Packed 400 boxes of food for needy families in Franklin County

• Worked with 40 6-12 year-olds doing skill specific drills at the Franklinton Park

• Moved donated tables to Franklinton for the Boys and Girls Club STEAM Lab

• Hosted youth on campus in April

• Worked with over 100 special needs children on campus playing games, dancing and having fun
