LEXINGTON, S.C. -- Louisburg College entered the Region X Baseball Tournament with plenty of momentum thanks to a late-season surge.
But the Hurricanes, after an extra-inning victory over USC-Union in the first round, ran out of steam from there and dropped the next two contests of the double-elimination event at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium in the Palmetto State.
LC kicked off its tournament stint last Friday with a tough victory over Union by a margin of 8-7 in 11 innings.
Last Saturday, the Hurricanes dropped out of the winner's bracket with a 6-2 loss to Florence-Darlington.
LC's campaign closed Sunday with a 16-10 setback versus USC-Lancaster.
"We really didn't show up in any facet of the game,'' said LC head coach Blake Herring. "We did not play well enough to win. It just was not a good tournament.''
The Hurricanes survived in the opening round by rallying to tie the score with four runs in the bottom of the seventh frame.
LC then won in walk-off fashion in the 11th as Landon Smith delivered the game-winning single.
Reliever Nick Mandragdona, who was exceptional out of the bullpen the entire spring, picked up the victory with two innings of scoreless work.
Darius Nobles and Justin Oakley went deep for the Hurricanes as part of the emotional conquest.
The next day, LC jumped ahead early with a single run in the top of the first off a Nobles RBI grounder, but would not score again until the ninth inning.
The Hurricanes managed just six hits for the outing, two of which came off Oakley's bat.
Needing a victory Sunday to stay alive, Louisburg instead dropped a slugfest to Lancaster despite racking up 13 base knocks.
Phillip Boykin, LC's lone All-Region First Team selection, with 4-for-5 with a homer, double and four RBI in the finale.
Heading into the tournament, Louisburg had won 14 of its last 15 contests.
"We had a lot of adversity through the year with injuries and illnesses,'' Herring said. "But we kept getting better and finished strong. Maybe we didn't do well in the tournament, but we were really good before then. I am happy in that sense.''
