Canes Edged by Catawba Valley

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College saw its seven-game baseball winning streak snapped Tuesday as part of a non-conference home meeting against Catawba Valley Community College.

The visiting Buccaneers delivered four runs in the top of the eighth frame and then held off the Hurricanes to register a 9-8, nine-inning triumph at historic Frazier Field on the LC campus.

Louisburg got off to a slow start as a trio of fielding mistakes, along with some clean hits from Catawba Valley, put LC behind by a 4-0 margin after the top of the first.

The Hurricanes immediately retaliated with four runs of their own in the bottom of the stanza as Charles Lee came through with a two-run double.

Neither club would score again until CVCC plated a quartet of markers in the top of the eighth.

LC clawed back with three runs in the bottom of the inning as Phillip Boykin remained hot with a clutch two-run single.

Catawba Valley notched an insurance tally in the top of the ninth, only to see LC threaten in the bottom of the decisive final frame -- only to be thwarted in the end.

Justin Oakley went 3-for-5 for Louisburg with a home run and one RBI to spark LC's nine-hit attack.

Louisburg College will resume its Region X slate this Friday and Saturday with a pair of home doubleheaders against the University of South Carolina-Sumter.

First pitch each day will be at 1 p.m., weather permitting, at Frazier Field.
